San Francisco: Google and Samsung said they are teaming up on a common software platform for smartwatches and other wearable devices in a bid to strengthen competition with market leader Apple.

The move, announced at the Google Developer Conference in California, means Samsung will use Google’s Wear operating system for its upcoming Galaxy smartwatches instead of its own Tizen platform.

“We bring the best of Wear and Tizen into a single, unified platform,” said Bjorn Kilburn, Google Wear Project Director.

“By working together, we’ve been able to leverage each other’s strengths and combine them into an experience that delivers faster performance, longer battery life, and more apps you love available for the watch.”

The combination will allow all device markets to use this platform, creating an ecosystem that could challenge Apple, the longtime leader in the smartwatch segment with around a third of the market, as Google integrates its new maker. of Fitbit wearable devices.

Samsung Vice Chairman Janghyun Yoon said in a separate statement that the South Korean company “is constantly looking for new ways to meet the ever-changing needs of consumers,” adding, “That is why we have decided to teaming up with Google … to bring the best of our platforms together in one unified experience. “

The announcement was made at Google’s annual developer conference, held online for the second year in a row due to the coronavirus pandemic.

At the event, Google unveiled a slew of updates and upgrades to its services, including maps, searches, shopping, and photos, while providing insight into its ongoing research projects.

Google offered a preview of its planned AI search tool, which aims to deploy more complex tasks in multiple languages.

With the unified multitasking model, “we are able to better understand much more complex issues and needs,” said senior vice president Prabhakar Raghavan, noting that he is “trained in 75 different languages ​​and many different tasks. at the same time, allowing to develop a more complete understanding of information and knowledge of the world than previous models. “

Google has released a test version of Android 12, updating the mobile system used by some three billion devices, with increased privacy controls and personalization.

The tech giant also unveiled its new quantum AI campus in Santa Barbara, California, which will conduct research in the emerging field of quantum computing and develop its own quantum processor chips.

Managing Director Sundar Pichai announced a push on geothermal energy as part of Google’s sustainability efforts. This will include a geothermal-powered data center in Nevada and the installation of the “largest geothermal pile system in North America” ​​at its new campus in California.

“We need to move beyond wind and solar and tap into on-demand clean energy sources like geothermal,” to achieve sustainability goals, said Pichai.
