Rupala was addressing a virtual conference of ASSOCHAM, an umbrella chamber of commerce of India, on the fishing and aquaculture industry on the theme of “Strategic roadmap to enable the blue revolution and economic growth ”.

He also explained how the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) has been striving to make changes for fish farmers and this can help increase exports. He highlighted the characteristics of PMMSY as well as various government-run programs to promote and uplift the sector.

Referring to the suggestion of a previous speaker to increase the credit limit beyond Rs three lakh under KCC, Rupala said: “It is not about whether Rs three lakh is less and needs to For an ordinary fisherman, whose requirement is often Rs 25,000 or Rs 30,000, he often ends up going to a local sahukar and getting into debt. KCC is intended to help this kind of fisherman.

The minister also said that the availability of land for fish farming and a policy on it is a long-standing issue and a political decision is needed on it.

Rupala admitted that there was a shortage of post-harvest infrastructure in the fishing industry and that there was a need for further investment in this area and said: “We would definitely figure out what anything can. be done within the framework of the PMMSY ”.

ASSOCHAM said that the objective of this virtual conference was to deliberate on the issues that can improve the growth rate in this sector and to record all the necessary steps to enter a new era of fishing and aquaculture in order to improve productivity with a strong focus on the latest opportunities in the sector with a focus on technology, marketing, finance, export and infra facilities.

The session was attended by leading fishing and aquaculture industry bodies / major industrialists, exporters, educators, bureaucrats, FPOs and other industry professionals.
