CINCINNATI, May 25, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Nine in 10 mothers surveyed nationwide said camping was one of the best activities for strengthening communication and family bonds, in part because children spend less time on social media during their outdoor vacation.

Over 800 moms and their children ages 6 to 12 were recently surveyed by Touchstone Research on a number of vacation topics. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts ordered the study.

Ninety percent of moms felt that camping / glamping led to greater communication and family bonding compared to other activities. Respondents said spending time together as a family and communicating face-to-face has the greatest impact, then spending time together cooking around a campfire and spending time away from online activities such as social media, ”said Kyle Morrison, research director at Touchstone Research.

Among moms with a camping experience, 95% said family members are less likely to engage in social media or other online camping / glamping activities than when they are at home. They cited several reasons:

  • Three-quarters attributed the variety of camping / glamping activities, including swimming, organized games and activities, and cooking, which left less time available for online activities.

  • Two-thirds said camping stimulates quality conversations between family members, which overshadows the need to connect with other people online. This, in turn, leads to better communication and a sense of connection between family members.

Eighty-five percent of moms who have ever camped also said that camping / glamping helps their family relax more than other types of vacations. “Respondents attributed quality time spent with family, the presence of nature, and the ability to disconnect from distractions as the main reasons camping / glamping helps their family relax,” said Morrison.

Nine in 10 mothers with camping experience said their family made some of their best camping / glamping memories; almost all (98%) said they would recommend camping or glamping to friends and / or family members who haven’t tried it yet.

The survey also found that moms prefer camping to other types of vacations. Seventy percent said they were somewhat to very comfortable while camping, compared to vacationing in an RV (63%) or staying in a hotel room (62%). Just over a third (37%) are comfortable traveling by air, and only one in five mothers is comfortable taking a cruise.

Providing children with the opportunity to learn new practical skills, controlling their family’s environment and saving money on restaurant meals were identified as the main strengths of camping.

Performed in the United States by Touchstone Research, Inc. on behalf of Jellystone Park, the margin of error for the survey is ± 3.4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. It was completed on April 24, 2021.
