SON squeezes substandard motor manufacturers

The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has advised motor oil users to be cautious when purchasing the product to avoid patronage of substandard and life-threatening products.

SON Chief Executive Mallam Farouk Salim gave the advice during an enforcement activity where SON’s Surveillance, Investigation and Control (SIM) unit discovered a contracted blending plant that engages in the production of substandard motor oil.

The enforcement exercise was the result of intelligence gathered regarding a particular product, Efemaco motor oil, which has been in circulation for a few months. However, the collaboration between SON and FCID Alagbon produced a suspect, Mr. Humble Igwe, who led the SON team to the contracted blending plant where various brands of engine oil were manufactured.

Represented by the Lagos Regional Office Manager and SIM Unit Coordinator, Mr. Suleiman Isa, the Managing Director of SON ordered that the premises of Mate Energy Industries Limited, located in the Shimawa area of the State of Ogun, be sealed indefinitely.

He described as shocking the situation in which any trader can walk into a blending plant and demand that a brand of engine oil be counterfeited and tampered with, pointing out that this is indeed a red flag for all Nigerians and a signal to especially SON that there is still a lot of work to be done.

According to Salim, the issue of contract blending, a situation in which people are paid to blend motor oil to produce substandard variants that bear no close or distant resemblance to the original brand of the engine oil, is a crime that would be prosecuted under the provisions of SON Law 14 of 2015 and the Penal Code

He advised the public to patronize only Made-in-Nigeria certified motor oil brands with the MANCAP logo and imported brands that have undergone SON off-shore (SONCAP) conformity assessment processes and are duly recorded for traceability and quality verification.

A total of 14 brands of lubricants were discovered to be manufactured by Mate Energy Industries Limited. They understand; Trust the lubricating fluid, Bouton Panache, Crescent, Golden link, Beacon and Efemaco.

Mate Energy Industries Limited facilities and contents will remain sealed, while samples of all brands will be taken for testing to verify the quality of all brands.
